Best Friends Animal Society applauds West Hollywood city council's consideration of resolution against puppy mills

This evening, the West Hollywood City Council will consider a resolution opposing the sale of dogs from puppy mills. Best Friends Animal Society is thrilled that leaders in the community believe that puppy mills are an important issue, and are prepared to take action to protect residents and animals alike from these inhumane facilities.

To show our support for this resolution, and to represent our West Hollywood members, Best Friends Animal Society will be represented at the city council meeting, which occurs tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the City Council Chambers (647 N. San Vicente Blvd., West Hollywood).

"Best Friends holds mobile adoptions in West Hollywood, and we are well aware of the hundreds of thousands of healthy animals available in area shelters," said Jennifer Krause of Best Friends. "While this problem remains, there is no need to mass-produce and import dogs from commercial breeding facilities (a.k.a. puppy mills)."

Mayor Pro Tempore Jeffery Prang and Councilmember Abbe Land, who initiated the resolution, have recommended that the city council adopts the resolution and that copies of the signed document be sent to Best Friends Animal Society.

One of the great injustices in the animal-loving community is that people who buy puppies from stores or commercial breeders are led to believe that the dogs are well-cared for, when in reality, they are merely presented as such. Meanwhile the breeding adults live in cages for their entire lives, kept there solely for their owners profit like livestock, instead of the companions that they are.
